It was necessary to treat an aqueous DMSO mixture, effectively separating the solvent from water and any heavy impurities, while ensuring a pure final product without the risk of thermal decomposition. The plant had to operatecontinuously for several hours per day, maintaining process stability and controlling critical parameters such as temperature and pressure to protect the heat-sensitive DMSO.
A continuous distillation plant was designed, featuring column C-101 with structured packing, a diathermic oil reboiler, and a top condenser to separate water from the solvent. Pure DMSO (≥97%) is drawn from the column bottom orfrom a side cut in the presence of heavy impurities, while water and light components are collected and sent to storage. The process operates under vacuum(0.2–0.6 bar) to limit the bottom temperature to around 140 °C, preventing product degradation. The system includes automatic control loops for level, pressure, temperature, and flow, ensuring stable, continuous, and safe operation.
